AVSL - What is it?
AVSL stands for Athletics Victoria Shield League.
Contested during the summer season, usually from October to March, AVSL is Athletics Victoria’s interclub track and field competition. With over 50 clubs and five AVSL divisions, clubs battle it out across ten to twelve rounds of AVSL to see who makes it to the AVSL Playoffs in March and, to decide promotion and relegation from each of the divisions. You compete for yourself but also earn points for your club. At the moment your best three events and a relay count towards Club Points each round.
AVSL features five graded divisions.
Clubs are graded in ‘divisions’ according to their performances in the 2020/21 AVSL season. Clubs compete against other clubs within that division. Mornington Peninsula Athletic Club is currently in Division 2.
The team with the highest accumulated points after each round is awarded maximum points which ultimately decides Playoff Qualification and Promotion and Relegation.
Zones
There are two metropolitan zones and three country zones. The metro zones are called Zone A and Zone B. Zone B is our home zone. Usually one metro zone will run program 1 and the other will run program 2. Between them the 2 zones cover almost all the events each week. The programs are alternated each week, so Zone B will have program 1 one week and program 2 the next week. Athletes usually compete in their home zone but sometimes go to the other metro zone if they are wanting to compete in a particular event. If athletes happen to be in Geelong, Ballarat or Bendigo they can compete there as well.
Entries
To compete in AVSL you must have either an AVSL package, ie season ticket, or pay for your individual round of competition. You must also do an online entry between Wednesday 2pm ten days out and midday Wednesday three days out. When you do your entry you need to put in your expected time for your track events so they can seed the events and run them fastest to slowest. For field events you need to nominate which sheet, ie time slot, you wish to compete in. Check the program first to make sure there are no clashes. Field events are limited in the number of entries for each sheet so get in early for field event entries.
